How to play Quordle

Quordle is Wordle times four. You have nine guesses to find four hidden five-letter words, and every guess you type is played on all four boards at once.

The rules of Classic Quordle

  • There are four boards, each with its own secret five-letter word.
  • You get nine guesses in total, not nine per board. Each guess must be a real five-letter word.
  • Your guess is checked separately against each board you have not solved yet.
  • A board is solved the moment you type its word exactly. After that, later guesses no longer appear on it.
  • You win by solving all four boards within nine guesses.

Four words in nine guesses means you have five guesses to spare for gathering information. That is generous for one board but tight for four, which is why Quordle rewards guesses that help several boards at once.

What the colors mean

  • Green: the letter is in the answer and in this exact position.
  • Yellow: the letter is in the answer, but in a different position.
  • Gray: this copy of the letter is not needed. Usually that means the letter is not in the answer at all, but with repeated letters it can mean "no more copies" (see repeated letters).

The colors on one board say nothing about the other boards. A letter can be gray on one board and green on the next.

A worked first guess

This is a constructed example, not a real daily puzzle. Suppose the four answers are PLANT, CRUMB, SHINE and GLOVE, and your first guess is STARE. The game shows a different row on every board:

What you can read from this one guess:

  • Top left: there is an A in the middle and a T somewhere other than second. S, R and E are out for this board.
  • Top right: only R is in the word, and not in fourth place. A board this quiet is common early on.
  • Bottom left: the word starts with S and ends with E. Already a strong position.
  • Bottom right: it ends in E, and S, T, A and R are all out.

A good second guess now uses fresh letters (for example I, O, N, L or C) that can help the quiet top-right board while also testing the others.

Solving a board

In the official game you finish a board by entering its word, and the game colors every tile itself. You never mark anything by hand.

If you want help working out what is still possible, our Quordle solver lets you copy the colors from your game onto four boards and see which words still fit. That is a separate companion tool: the colors you enter there come from your game, not from the solver.
